PhD Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the PhD program at MDSU, candidates must meet the following criteria.

Educational Qualifications

  • Candidates must have completed a 1-year (2-semester) master's degree after a 4-year (8-semester) bachelor's degree or a 2-year (4-semester) master's degree after a 3-year bachelor's degree. Alternatively, candidates with qualifications declared equivalent to a master's degree by the relevant statutory regulatory body are also eligible. A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (or its equivalent grade) is required in the qualifying examination.

  • For candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled/Economically Weaker Section (EWS), a relaxation of 5% marks is allowed. Download Phd Pyq

  • Candidates who have completed an MPhil degree with at least 55% marks (or its equivalent grade) are also eligible for admission to the PhD program. The same relaxation of 5% marks applies to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled/EWS candidates.

PhD Selection Procedure

The selection process for PhD admission at MDSU is based on the following criteria.

Admission Methods

Weightage for Selection

  • For candidates who qualify under Category 2 (appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to PhD) and Category 3 (admission to PhD only), 70% weightage is given to the NET score and 30% weightage is given to the interview.

  • Candidates who qualify under Category 1 (award of JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor) are admitted directly based on an interview.

Interview Process

The interview is conducted by an Interview Board consisting of the Dean of Post Graduate Studies, the Dean of the concerned faculty, the Head of the University Teaching Department, a subject expert nominated by the Vice-Chancellor, and the Director of Research. The interview assesses the candidate's research aptitude, subject knowledge, and proposed research area.

Relaxation for Reserved Categories.

  • A relaxation of 5% marks in the NET score is allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Differently-Abled/EWS categories.

PhD Duration

The minimum duration for completing a PhD is 3 years, including the coursework. The maximum duration for completing a PhD is 6 years from the date of admission. An additional 2 years can be granted through a re-registration process, but the total duration should not exceed 8 years. Many situations may be increased.
